The Cincinnati Foundation For The Aged was originally formed as an organization supporting a retirement home for immigrant Cincinnati workers. Many were of German decent and worked for brewing companies in Over the Rhine. On December 31, 1890, twenty-five of Cincinnati's business and professional leaders met and signed the articles of incorporation. Some of the notable were; JG Schmidlapp, Christian Morelein, John Hauck, Frederick Alms, Albert Erkenbrecker, Charles Hoefinghoff, Justus Goebel, Frank Tuchfarber, Charles Albrecht, Frank Duhme, Henry Snider, and Gustav Tafel.

A retirement home was built and opened on April 23, 1893 at Burnet and Elland Avenues, in Mt. Auburn. More than fifty aged men occupied "The Duetsches Altenheim". Here, they could live out their lives, with a feeling of security; knowing that never again would they need to seek for a home. The home was sold to Childrens Hospital in the 1960's. Since then, the Foundation has been helping the aged by subsidizing the costs of living in Cincinnati area retirement facilities.
